SVE Timing – Mid-Atlantic results are posted for Sprint, King and Queen of the Hill, and the Mountains contests,  reported for 5-year age groups. To view your overall time on course, click your name to expand the view to include all timing data.

There were some fierce competitions out there. Congrats to everyone who set out on the amazing adventure!

Mountains Contest (Shenandoah Mountain Century and Shenandoah Mountain Adventure routes categories combined and Alpine Loop) winners are awarded jerseys. Winners who were not present will be contacted by The Prostate Cancer Awareness Project to arrange sizing and shipping.

Weather Update [Sat. 9AM]

There are very different weather conditions, depending on where you are right now. Today, Harrisonburg is being impacted by the weather from tropical storm Ophelia. We’ll see gusty winds and periods of rain on and off throughout the day. The Fundraising Riders event has been updated. Those participants have been notified (check your inboxes).

At this time, the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo is scheduled to take place as planned. Our local meteorologist is forecasting the impacts of the storm to move out in the late night/early a.m. hours, with clearing on Sunday.

All participants have been e-mailed. We’ll provide additional updates, if needed.

Get ready for adventure!

2023 Alpine Loop Gran Fondo bib numbers are available, scroll down to view.

Packet Pickup will take place:

Saturday, September 23, 2-6 p.m.
Brothers Craft Brewing
800 N Main Street,
Harrisonburg, Virginia
Brothers Craft Brewing parking lot can be accessed from 160 E. Washington Street.
Parking is also available in the adjacent Montebello Packaging parking lot on N. Main Street; and curbside.

Sunday, September 24, 6:30-7:45 a.m.

Turner Pavilion / Staging Area & Finish Line Location
228 S Liberty Street, Harrisonburg, Virginia

For those able to, please collect your packets on Saturday. Event-day packet pickup is for those unable to arrive on Saturday.

All participants need to collect their corresponding timing chip at the event2023 Bibs by Last Name. Timing chips will not be in rider packets. Simply approach the timing chip distribution tables one at a time and collect your chip. You must have your bib number with you. Timing chips must be returned at the finish line.

Riders can collect someone else’s number and packet if: the absent rider has completed their online event waiver (most of you have). Otherwise, they will need to check in and complete a form onsite. Please do not “do your friend a favor” and collect their bib number and packet without asking them first – this leads to confusion.

Riders who purchased additional merchandise, jerseys, and meal tickets will receive those items in their packets. Event t-shirts and socks will not be mailed to riders who do not attend the event. Any unclaimed jerseys that were purchased will be mailed following the event.

2023 Event Brief

Ready for the Adventure!
2023 Alpine Loop Gran Fondo Need-to-Knows

This is one of the most exciting times of the year for us. We look forward to welcoming you and sharing in some great adventures. We want your experience at the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo to be outstanding. Need-to-know information highlights follow, below.

Route Switch?
We will account for all riders on course, and knowing which route you intend to complete is very important. Please use the Entry Edit feature prior to 5PM on Thursday. After that time, route updates should be relayed to volunteers at the packet pickup (in advance) or the timing staff (event morning). If you need to shorten your route selection on the fly, simply inform a volunteer at the rest stations. Anyone unaccounted for at the end of the day will receive a call from us to make sure they’re ok.

Transfer Your Entry
If you know that you will be unable to attend and you would like to transfer your registration to another rider who you know, you can Transfer Your Entry. These transfer requests must be received prior to 5 PM on Thursday.

Requests for reimbursement for non-participation for qualifying reasons should be made directly to the event insurance policy holder here: https://www.eventregistrationprotection.com/allianzregistration/home

Rider Bib Numbers
Numbers will be published online at www.AlpineLoopGranFondo.com by Friday, September 22. All you’ll need to know at packet pickup is your name or bib number. You completed a waiver online when you registered. If for any reason you do not have an online waiver completed in advance, you will simply be asked to sign one onsite.

Pre-Event Health Screening
For your safety on the course, you are strongly discouraged from participating in the event if you have experienced any of the following symptoms within 48 hours of the event: fever or chills, cough, shortness of breath or difficulty breathing, fatigue not attributable to exercise, chest pain, muscle or body aches not attributable to exercise, nausea or vomiting, diarrhea.

Packet Pick-up Opportunities
Your event packet will include your bib # and pins, Ridge Supply socks, your event t-shirt, and any additional merchandise (jersey, spectator meal tickets, etc.) you purchased when you registered. Pickup opportunities will take place outdoors at the following locations:

Saturday, September 23, 2-6PM
Brothers Craft Brewing patio
Address: 800 N. Main Street, Harrisonburg, Virginia
(Main parking lot to rear of Brewery can be accessed from 180 E. Washington Street)
Valley Pike BBQ will be onsite offering lunch and dinner.

Sunday, September 24, 6:30-7:45AM
Turner Pavilion – Start/Finish Line Location
Address: 228 S Liberty Street, Harrisonburg, Virginia

All timing chips will be distributed on Sunday morning. Timing chips must be returned to the finish line. If you abandon the ride for any reason, notify finish line volunteers and return your timing chip. The replacement cost of a timing chip is $100 and will be billed by the timing company to any participant who does not return their timing chip.

Event Start: Sunday, September 24 – 8:00AM (All Routes)
Spectators can watch the start from 409 S. Main Street. Cancer survivors and fundraising riders are invited to lead the start. When we roll out it will be in a neutral parade with police escorts for the first couple miles. Tandems and e-bike riders will be asked to stage in the rear.

On Course Support A detailed description of rest station food supplies will be updated at AlpineLoopGranFondo.com on Friday upon receipt of rest station supplies from our distributor.

Friends and Family Volunteers Helpful folks are welcome to lend a hand at the rest stations along the routes. Volunteer signups can be found here.

Come Prepared
Generally, come prepared to fix some flats, be highly visible, carry ID, a phone, a download of your route, enough food and water to get you to your first rest station, and any highly-specific nutrition or equipment repair needs you could need along the way. Charge your devices and electronic components. Bring a bike that is in excellent working order. All riders must carry at least one spare inner tube, a pump, and a multi-tool. Alpine Loop riders must bring two tubes. Share your route with accompanying friends or family so they can assist should you need unexpected support. Sag support has always been a creative combination of efforts among course vehicles, rest station crews, and a few roving helpers. Sag capacity is limited and includes ferrying riders forward to keep them rolling whenever possible.

Dress for Changing Weather
Dress in layers suitable for the changing weather conditions typical of the mountains and Shenandoah Valley. The forecast calls for some crisp mornings this week and afternoon highs in the low 70s. Come with a wind/waterproof layer and you’ll be prepared. You can drop gear at the rest stations if you are willing to wait for it to be shuttled back to town at the end of the day, but we recommend keeping it with you so you are adaptable to changing temperatures over the various elevations.

An important message about emergency communications
Ultimately, you are responsible for your safety. Carry a cell phone if possible, and note: even when your cell phone shows no reception, if there is another provider in the area, that provider is obligated to connect your 911 emergency call. In remote areas along the course, houses have landlines. Remote rest stations and some roving support vehicles will carry satellite phones. Deputies and ambulances will be stationed at critical locations on Shenandoah Mountain and have emergency radios. Sometimes going backwards on the course will be the fastest route to one of these communications options.

Finish Line Reminders
The giant Swiss bell will be waiting for you. Give it a ring to announce your finish! Claim your medal and enjoy having your picture taken at the photo booth. Your event bib will have your meal and beer tickets attached. Bring your ID and cash for additional beer. There will be no showers at the finish line this year. We’re bringing back the family-style banquet tables, but you’re still invited to bring a lawn chair and/or picnic blankets to spread out and relax in the grassy area adjacent to the finish line if you prefer.

2023 Volunteers Needed

Community, camaraderie and encouragement are at the heart of the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo. Just like riders, volunteer participants are a big part of this event!

Sign up opportunities will continued to be added/embedded and updated through the first week of September. Check back for more live links, coming soon.

From pre-event preparations, to day-of excitement and after-party celebrations, volunteers have many special talents to share and roles to fill.

In 2023, 100% of volunteer tasks will take place entirely outdoors.

Thank you for your interest in supporting the event and it’s charitable mission!

Here is an overview of available volunteer opportunities for the 2023 Alpine Loop Gran Fondo. To be directed to specific opportunities, read on:

Rest Stations are important stops along the Alpine Loop, Shenandoah Mountain Adventure, Shenandoah Mountain Century, Mt Solon Metric Century and Valley View Challenge routes; providing riders with food and drink, minor mechanical assistance and parts. When the ride is complete, what cyclists remember most about the Rest Stations are the incredible support and enthusiast encouragement provided by the Volunteers.

Sign up to assist:
Thorn Spring Park Rest Station
Brandywine Volunteer Fire Department Rest Station
Sugar Grove Rest Station
Briery Branch Community Center

Volunteers are encouraged to drive their personal vehicles along the route to assist at Rest Stations, where you can also cheer for the riders who are special to you.

Spectator/drivers are asked not to follow individual riders along the course; instead select Rest Station where you can connect with your special person on the course.

Volunteers who drive a vehicle capable of carrying bicycles are asked to check in with the Rest Station Manager before departing, in case a cyclist needs to be returned to the Finish Line Festival. For additional flexibility, please consider driving a vehicle with bicycle carrying capacity.

Course Marshals will be stationed at intersections and other locations along the routes to direct and caution cyclists. Some of these tasks (downtown course marshals) can be handled by cyclists who will also participate in the event – often in exchange for a partially discounted entry fee.

Registration Volunteers are needed in the days leading up to the event and on event day. These roles are often filled by riders who will participate in the Alpine Loop Gran Fondo – often in exchange for a partially discounted.
(e-mail Erin@ AlpineLoopGranFondo.com for entry details)

Sign up to serve volunteer at:
Packet Pickup Volunteer on Saturday, Sept. 23 location to-be-determined
Packet Pickup Volunteer on Sunday, Sept. 24  at the Turner Pavilion (Event Start Location)

Venue Setup / Festival Volunteers get to experience the amazing transformation of the Turner Pavilion into the setting for the Finish Line Festival. In just 2 hours, this great team of helpers sets up the Finish Line, readies tables and chairs, decorates the Pavilion, unveils the finisher medals and Swiss Bells, and places the bike racks – all in anticipation of the day’s cycling finishers. Throughout the day, other volunteers can help maintain the venue, distribute KOM jerseys, and assist with breakdown. Sign up to serve as a Venue Volunteer.

Volunteers will receive an event t-shirt, as available, if sizing allows.

If you are a team or individual who wants to lend your support in another way, please e-mail Contact@AlpineLoopGranFondo.com to share your interest and talents.
