Cyclists riding the Alpine Loop, Shenandoah Mountain Century and Shenandoah Mountain Adventure routes can compete for the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project King and Queen of the Mountains titles and jerseys. Full details follow:
Prostate Cancer Awareness Project KOM Jerseys will be awarded to men’s and women’s winners in 5-year age group categories.
Shenandoah Mountain Century and Shenandoah Mountain Adventure riders will compete against each other as they tackle one KOM segment on course: the paved climb up Virginia Route 33 on Shenandoah Mountain. The KOM segment begins (approximately) at mile 20 and ends at mile 23.8.
Alpine Loop riders will face two KOM segments on course. The first KOM segment is up the paved climb up Virginia Route 33 on Shenandoah Mountain. This KOM segment begins (approximately) at mile 20 and ends at mile 23.8. The second of the KOM segments will feature the dirt climb up the “Dark Side” of Shenandoah Mountain on FR85 from the Rest Station at Sugar Grove to a point near the summit of the climb – but before turning onto the (optional) spur to view the peak at Reddish Knob; from miles (approximately) 62 to 72.
Male and female participants can team up to compete in the Couples Conquer the Mountain KOM Contest; a KOM competition in which the male/female pair with the lowest combined time on KOM Segment #1 will win. Participants can be riders in the Shenandoah Mountain Adventure, Shenandoah Mountain Century and/or the Alpine Loop routes. This contest is inspired by the Prostate Cancer Awareness Project Couples Conquering Cancer initiative that highlights the importance of men and women teaming up through lifestyle, diet and screening for cancer prevention.
The KOM Start/Finish Points will be indicated on the route maps, and published in the race manual on or before September 1, 2016. Exact locations will be subject to re-positioning – only slightly and to suit the needs of timing equipment on the course.
KOM Start and Finish locations will be designated on course by red “KOM Start” and “KOM Finish” signs. Riders will be alerted to upcoming KOM segments on course by “KOM Start 1-K Ahead” and “KOM Finish 1-K Ahead.”
Electronic chip timing for KOM segments is provided by Mid-Atlantic Timing. All riders will wear timing chips affixed to their helmets. Click here for Helmet Timing Chip Instructions. All riders will also be required to affix a number plate to their bicycle frame. In both locations, your number is important for event timing, to help identify your location on course, and for emergency purposes.
Prostate Cancer Awareness Project KOM and QOM podium ceremonies will take place at the Finish Line Festival according to the following schedule:
4 p.m. – Shenandoah Mountain Adventure/Shenandoah Mountain Century KOM Ceremony
5:30 p.m. – Alpine Loop KOM Ceremony, Couples Conquer the Mountain Ceremony
In the event that a KOM winner has not arrived at the Finish Line in time for the award ceremony, Jersey will be presented upon arrival.
Between KOM Ceremonies participants and spectators will enjoy live performances by the hard-driving bluegrass group Shenandoah Alley and modern americana band The Judy Chops!
